Powerful & Effective Programs To Build & Support Long-Term Success

Twitter has fast become, and will continue to be, the best social media marketing opportunity for restaurants since email. If utilized successfully, you can use Twitter to support guest relationships in a multitude of ways:

  • gathering guest feedback
  • gathering guest information
  • follow-up on guest experiences
  • event notification
  • promotional support
  • Cause Marketing efforts
  • guest loyalty programs
  • and the list goes on and on…( I am currently working on a list of the ‘Top 100 Ways to Drive Guest Engagement Using Twitter’ that I will post shortly)

I have been on Twitter (Personal = @JeffreySummers My Company = @SHGWW) since last December, 2008, and really dove in last month. I have grown my number of followers from 98 to over 4,600 as of this post and growing at around 60 – 100 new followers a day. How many email addresses are you adding to your database each day?

The downside of Twitter for some is the addictive nature of engaging such really cool people in such a really cool way. If you’re not careful, you will look down at your watch and discover you’ve lost an entire work day.

Another important point about Twitter is that you need to use it strategically to get the best ROI from it. Having and setting goals for participation by yourself and your guests is really important – just like any other marketing strategy you use. And for restaurants in particular, it is extremely important given the social nature of both restaurants and social media, that you understand that Twitter is a guest support tool and is not a guest creation tool. Big difference here in that being a social business, you pretty much need to follow everyone who follows you – except of course people who send you spam or do not fit your target market profile. It’s important that you give the people who are your guests or are prospective guests the majority of your efforts. Remember the Pareto Principle.

For me, given the way I perceive the nature of social media, I follow everyone back who follows me. I believe that in order to have conversations about things that interest you or give you ideas, information or a different perspective, it’s important to not block access to anyone who could potentially help foster your next greatest idea of give you a piece of information or advice or suggestion that could help you innovate some part of your thinking on virtually any subject.

However, I do not follow people blindly. I do not follow you if you;

  • do not have a website. Engage with the process or don’t.
  • do not use a picture of yourself or your business logo or any avatar that reflects who you are. Pictures of your cat or your mom’s 86th b’day party don’t cut it.
  • do not follow others – following 250 people but have 25,000 following you makes you undesirable to me, no matter how important you think you are.
  • send me ads about buying your latest ebook on raising Alpacas. (You get the picture.)
  • do not have a biography. The whole point is to get to know you right?
  • never post anything. I’ve seen people with 1,000 followers but only 7 posts. And those were spread out over 8 months. Again, be committed to the process or not.
  • ignore questions or comments I send you in regards to your posts. The medium is about engagement.
  • take more than 3-5 days to reply back to me.
  • have nothing remotely intelligent to say. Blaming France for your economic woes doesn’t cut it.
  • talk over other people’s conversations or hijack them in mid-stream. If I’m having a conversation with someone, don’t butt in.
  • many more that I’ll add as time goes by.

You must also understand that I have followers who span 14 different time zones on 3+ continents and I will most likely retweet what I feel are extremely important posts frequently – usually once every four hours. So if you see this be forewarned and expect it to happen.

I try to answer every reply within 90 mins. and every DM within 24 hours. Most occur much sooner but as my follower list grows, I receive more and more @replies and DM’s every hour of the day and obviously Monday’s are more insane than Wednesday’s. So don’t be shy about asking questions.
